Clam Chowder Friday

Usually if I can't find anything appetite stimulating from the cafeteria on Friday, it's never a problem because I can always get a cup of New England clam chowder to fill my stomache. Clam chowder has once been my favorite soup, but not anymore since each restaurant makes it a little different and not all would satisfy my tummy. For instance, lacking of clams is always a concern. I just returned from the cafeteria with some clam chowder. After a few times of swirling and mixing, I realized that this cup of clam chowder was loaded with clams!! I mean, 4-5 clams per spoonful of chowder. I'm amazed simply because the SRI cafe is known for its overcharge, but poor quality food. While enjoying my clam chowder, another question raised in my head -- why do we always get clam chowder on Friday? I can't help but to do a search on the internet. Yet, I cannot find any supporting evidence as to why/how does clam chowder Friday becomes an American tradition. What makes me more confused is that Friday was chosen to be the fasting (or meatless) days by the puritans and pilgrims due to religious reasons. How does clam chowder become a Friday-soup-of-the-day in our culture?

If any of you knows the answer, please drop me a few lines.
