Here's the answer to the Honey Buzzle question #1:

The original idea of zipper is to promote self-reliance so that people can dress themselves appropriately without help from the others. The zipper on a man's jacket is designed on the right because most people are right-handed. Having a zipper on the right side can make fastening easier. You may ask, aren't most women right-handed as well? Why is the zipper on the woman's jacket designed on the left? Well, decades ago, women who belonged to the middle and upper class in the social hierarchy usually had maids to dress them up. By having the zipper on the left of a jacket could make it easier for the maids.
